Connecticut State Police conducts women-only recruitments
The Connecticut State Police is making a concerted effort to create a roster more reflective of the state’s population by pursuing female candidates. Last fall, the CSP held two female-only informational workshops to teach the basics about life as a trooper. The result: a 35 percent increase in females taking the CSP exam in May, as compared to the previous year’s exam. Currently, just 7 percent of sworn CSP members are women. To bring more females onto the force, members of the Recruitment and Selections Unit hosted nearly 200 women from around the state during the workshops. Female CSP troopers – ranking from trooper to the department’s top-ranking female, Lt. Col. Cheryl Malloy – talked with audience members about the rigors of the academy. “If you want to do this; if it’s in here,” said Lt. Col. Malloy, pointing to her heart, “then you’ll get through it.” Among the top concerns of those in attendance – including mothers, daughters, college students, and career women – was leaving children and other family members during the 28 weeks required at the training academy. Troopers explained maternity leaves, benefits, and expectations to the potential recruits. They also presented a video of the academy experience. The audience witnessed the reality of being yelled at, running miles on the academy grounds, doing pushups, and taking notes in class. These two workshops were the first of their kind restricted to an audience of women. |
