AAST helps information officers share programs
In 1968 troopers from Kansas, Iowa, and Nebraska created a workshop in which states could share their safety programs and discuss ways to promote traffic safety. Today, in its 41st year, the Uniformed Safety Education Officers Workshop helps public information officers in 24 member states share and improve on their safety education programs. The USEOW conference was held in Jackson, Wyo., June 6-8, with 34 troopers in attendance, representing seven states: Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Texas, and Wyoming. AAST again helped sponsor the event with a financial donation. Each state’s representative gives a 30-minute traffic safety presentation, allowing an opportunity to share ideas. The presentations are evaluated in four different areas: adaptability, creativity, content, and current topic. The winning presentation receives the Hale award, named for W. H. Hale, a pioneer in the area of traffic safety in Texas. This year the Hale award was claimed by Sr. Tpr. Michael Perez of the Texas DPS, and the award for best radio public service announcement went to Sr. Tpr. Garry Parker, also of the Texas DPS. USEOW leaders are hopeful that department budgets will allow even more states to participate in the 2010 conference, slated for St. Louis in June. |
