AAST welcomes new Executive Director
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Ken Howes, 51, as the new executive director of AAST. Three days before starting as executive director on September 10, Ken retired from the Florida Highway Patrol at the rank of lieutenant colonel, deputy director of Law Enforcement Support Services, a position he had held for over four years. During his 31-year career with the FHP, Ken worked his way up through the ranks and served in various positions throughout Florida, including 10 years in general headquarters as FHPs chief public information officer. As chief PIO, Ken gained extensive experience in public relations, marketing and media relations. He also developed the FHP website (www.fhp.state.fl.us), launched Florida's *FHP program for cell phone users, and produced dozens of traffic safety campaigns. During the last four years, Ken has been responsible for a variety of areas under his command, including auxiliary/reserves, technology/communications, public affairs, contraband interdiction, traffic homicide, staff inspections, seven regional communication centers, and security for Florida's lieutenant governor. Ken holds a bachelor of public administration degree from Barry University. He and his wife, Gail, live in Tallahassee, and they have two grown children and four grandchildren. Ken has been a member of AAST since 1995 and has served on the AAST Scholarship Foundation board of directors for the last several years. He has a keen interest in AAST and is excited about seeing the organization continue to improve the services provided to its members. If you have questions for Ken, you may contact him at 800-765-5456, or by e-mail, ken@statetroopers.org. |
