Judges hand down death sentence for state trooper murdersFlorida Sottile was conducting a traffic stop January 12, 2007, on US-27 in Highlands County when he was shot and killed by Altersberger, who remained at large throughout the night. Altersberger and a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the stop were apprehended the next morning, following a massive search by law enforcement officers representing 25 state, federal, and local law enforcement agencies. Sottile, a 24-year veteran of the FHP, is survived by his wife and two children, including his son, who at the time was also a member of the FHP and is now a deputy sheriff. Missouri The jury deliberated three hours before returning a guilty verdict on March 27 of first-degree murder, but they were unable to come to a unanimous decision regarding whether Shockley should get the death penalty or life in prison without parole. Therefore, the sentencing decision fell to Judge David Evans, who on May 22 sentenced Shockley to death. Graham had just completed his shift and arrived at his home when he was shot and killed in his driveway in Van Buren, Mo. Investigators believe that Shockley’s motive was his involvement with a fatal crash that Graham had been investigating. Graham had served with the MSHP for 12 years and is survived by his son. |
