Trooper survives hit-and-run crash

Tpr. McCreedy
Trooper Marty McCreedy

On March 16 Tpr. Marty McCreedy of the Iowa State Patrol was working a late-night Operating While Intoxicated project when he noticed an erratically driven pickup truck about 3 a.m. McCreedy activated his emergency lights, but the truck didn’t stop. Instead, it went into the median and back out, striking McCreedy's vehicle in the driver's door.

Tpr. McCreedy’s cruiser was hit twice by a hit-and-run driver before the trooper crashed into a concrete barrier and sustained only minor injuries.

The pickup continued, striking McCreedy's vehicle yet again. The truck then went into the median and entered Interstate 80 in Council Bluffs. McCreedy was traveling approximately 50 mph on the median side shoulder going against traffic, looking for a place to cross the marshy median, when suddenly a concrete barrier appeared in his path.

Unable to see the blunt end of the concrete barrier because of oncoming headlights, McCreedy's vehicle slammed into the construction-site barrier, pinning the trooper in his cruiser.

After being extricated from the vehicle, fortunately McCreedy was found to have only suffered bumps, bruises, and a minor concussion. At press time, the search for the pickup was ongoing.
