Troopers deliver warrants, prisoners, and sometimes even Christmas gifts, but it’s not often that they get to help bring a new baby into the world.

On the morning of December 3, Virginia State Police dispatchers received a call from a man traveling on I-64 in Alleghany County, stating he was en route to the hospital with his wife to deliver their baby, but it appeared that she would have the baby before they could make it to the hospital. He was asking for a trooper’s assistance.

The soon-to-be dad then stopped the vehicle on the shoulder of I-64.

Tpr. D. C. Ratliff arrived on scene within minutes, and with the assistance of Tpr. R. K. Hawse, delivered a baby boy seven minutes later. Shortly after the arrival of the baby, the rescue squad arrived and transported mom and baby safely to a nearby hospital.

Kaydan Issiah was a healthy baby boy, weighing in at 6 lb. 2 oz. The parents continue to express their appreciation to the VSP, particularly Ratliff and Hawse, for the part they played in the safe arrival of their little bundle of joy.

Many may call this the crowning achievement of Ratliff and Hawse’s law enforcement career.
