Hundreds of state troopers converged on Washington D.C. on the days surrounding the inauguration of the 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama, when almost two million people were in town for the historic event.

Troopers from across the country joined numerous other law enforcement agencies to provide security as part of the joint operation mission of the Presidential Inauguration Task Force in Washington, D.C., January 15-21. Troopers were sworn in as deputies of the U.S. Marshal Service to have necessary law enforcement authority for the task force operation. Officers provided security for the inaugural parade, the swearing-in ceremony, various balls, government dignitaries, and other special events. Air, water, and railways were also under tighter-than-usual security, with many trooper K-9 teams working the areas. Thanks to a brisk wind chill, temperatures dipped into the low 30s along the parade route as troopers stood for as long as 13 hours keeping an eye on the crowds.

With 156 troopers and supervisors, VSP had the second largest presence along the parade route.
