Group celebrates 30 years of helping trooper familiesA non-profit group recently celebrated 30 years of caring for the families of Missouri state troopers who are killed in the line of duty. In 1979, Col. Al Lubker of the Missouri State Highway Patrol presented an idea to Gov. Joseph P. Teasdale for the formation of the Missouri Association of State Troopers Emergency Relief Society. Over the past three decades, the group has proven its worth to the patrol. The organization, started by civilians not connected to the patrol, includes people who wish to provide support for families of troopers killed in the line of duty. When a death occurs, a MASTERS representative visits the family, offers guidance during the difficult time, and provides financial assistance to relieve immediate concerns. The MASTERS assists with funeral expenses, loan payments, mortgage payments, and immediate bills. It also provides scholarships for officers’ dependent children. Over the years, the MASTERS has expended over $874,000 to assist 17 families. The 501(c)3 nonprofit group currently includes 1,032 members. Contributions and gifts to the MASTERS are tax deductible and serve as the organization’s sole income. The MASTERS recently became part of the Missouri State Employees Charitable Campaign, allowing state employees, who elect, to make contributions to the MASTERS through payroll deduction. Many highway patrol and state police departments across the country have inquired about the group’s formation and functions, as it serves as a prototype of an organization that allows citizens to offer invaluable help to troopers’ surviving family members.
